Synopsis

Sergei and Tanya are young and in love. Then Sergei is drafted into the navy, his unit is lost at sea, and Tanya receives a death notice. She waits, grieves, and eventually marries someone else — a friend who was always there.
Sergei, it turns out, survived. He and a wounded comrade were found on a deserted island after a long winter. He comes home to find nothing is as he left it. The film is less a love story than a study of what people do when life doesn't give them the ending they expected. Innokenty Smoktunovsky, Irina Kupchenko, and Iya Savvina round out the cast.
