Synopsis
The Movie Emperor (红毯先生, 2024) is a Chinese comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Ning Hao with Andy Lau at its centre. The original title translates roughly to "Mr. Red Carpet" — which captures the whole problem.
Lau Wai-chi was once the undisputed face of Hong Kong cinema. Now he is fading from the conversation, so his team lines him up with a prestigious indie about rural peasants in the 1960s. To prepare, he travels to the Chinese countryside. What follows is a slow-motion collision between superstar self-importance and a village with absolutely no interest in accommodating it. Tony Leung Ka-fai appears in a key supporting role.
