Synopsis

Shanghai in the 1930s: Ruan Lingyu could fill a cinema on her name alone. Off screen she was grinding through a punishing personal life — an exploitative first husband, a second partner who drained her finances, and tabloid papers that ran every detail as front-page entertainment. Kwan builds her story through period-accurate dramatisation and documentary passages where Cheung herself steps out of character to reflect on the woman she is playing.
