Synopsis

It is May 1940. German forces sweep across the continent, the British army is trapped on the beaches at Dunkirk, and the cabinet is pushing for a deal with Berlin. The new leader has to choose: chase a settlement with Hitler or commit the country to a fight no one can promise to win. The pressure comes from every side — Viscount Halifax (Stephen Dillane) lobbies for terms, King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) keeps his distance, and only a young typist, Elizabeth Layton (Lily James), glimpses the man behind the cigars and the temper.
