Synopsis
Here We Live (1956) is a Kazakh drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Shaken Aimanov and Matvey Volodarsky, it drops us into 1954, as the first squad of young Virgin Lands settlers steps off into the empty Kazakh steppe to break open untouched soil.
Old forester Bulanbai tells the newcomers plainly how hard it will be — and the young crew dig in anyway. Their fight isn't only with the brutal land. Kuanysh Korkutov, who runs the state-farm trust, plays it safe and drags his feet, while Kudryash, head of the Komsomol farm, defies orders to gamble on the tougher but richer fields, backed by regional secretary Beisov. The clash ends with Korkutov pushed out, just as a fresh wave of young workers reaches the farm. A plain-spoken, unshowy chronicle of those first steppe years, with Aimanov himself on screen.
