Synopsis
Imperial Dreams (2014) is available to watch online on iFILM — a feature debut from director Malik Vitthal, set in the Watts neighbourhood of Los Angeles. John Boyega plays Bambi, a 21-year-old who walks out of prison with a plan and almost no means to execute it.
He wants to write, raise his son, stay clear of the crew he grew up with. What stands in the way is not one thing but a system of interlocking obstacles: a felony record blocks public housing applications, parole conditions eliminate most jobs, and old associates take his absence as a personal affront. Keke Palmer and Glenn Plummer round out a cast that keeps the film rooted in the specific texture of the neighbourhood. Boyega carries every scene — this was before Star Wars, and the range was already there.
