Synopsis
The Empresses (Императрицы, 2023) is a Russian historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Andrei Kravchuk opens on the moment Peter the Great dies in 1725 with no named heir, leaving a young empire and an empty throne up for grabs.
Years earlier Peter had pledged his youngest daughter Elizabeth to Louis XV, promising her the crown of France. The deal dies with him. His widow Catherine I takes the throne — the first woman ever to rule Imperial Russia — and tries to honor that promise, only to run out of time. The French king, meanwhile, rejects Elizabeth once he learns she was born before her parents wed. What follows is a stretch of palace coups in which women decide whether the new capital on the Neva survives. Yulia Peresild and Ivan Kolesnikov anchor the cast.
