Confined to a hospital bed while his unit fought on, the self-taught mechanic with no formal engineering training started sketching weapon designs on whatever paper he could find. The film follows his years of failure, rejected prototypes, and bureaucratic dead ends before the AK-47 was finally adopted — making him, by his late twenties, the man behind the most-produced rifle in history. Olga Lerman plays the woman who anchored him through those years; Arthur Smolyaninov and Vitaly Khaev fill out the military and design-bureau world around him.
