The Long Call (Season 1)

The Long Call (2021) is a British crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Lee Haven Jones. It adapts Ann Cleeves' novel — the same writer behind Vera and Shetland — with Ben Aldridge as Detective Matthew Venn, a gay officer who grew up in a strict evangelical community in North Devon, was cast out as a young man, and is back, unwanted, for his father's funeral.

The morning after he arrives, a body turns up on the beach — no ID, just an albatross tattoo on his neck. Venn has to run a murder investigation in a place where half the witnesses remember him as the one who walked away from the church. Pearl Mackie plays his sergeant, Juliet Stevenson his difficult mother. The coastal setting keeps things deceptively calm while the investigation digs into old loyalties and older wounds.
