It is 1947. Former war correspondent Alexander Ganin arrives planning to write his memoirs. Quiet work doesn't follow.

Ganin lands in the middle of the newly formed local criminal investigation unit and starts helping investigators work through cases that carry the full weight of a city still sorting out who belongs where. Leonid Bichevin, Alexander Bukharov, and Maria Andreeva anchor a grey postwar landscape where the detective work and the politics underneath it are never quite separate.
