Victoria Belyaeva is the only person in her unit without a family, which makes her the obvious pick whenever an awkward posting comes up. This time she is sent to Yaroslavl, where a senior Moscow police colonel has been killed under circumstances that are already threatening to blow into a public scandal. Victoria needs to identify the murderer before the story leaks.
