Student Rodion Raskolnikov (Ivan Yankovsky) is worn thin by debt and one fixed idea: that the chosen few are allowed to step over a line for a greater purpose. He tests the theory on himself and kills an old pawnbroker. What follows isn't a manhunt but a quiet duel — investigator Porfiry Petrovich gathers almost no evidence and simply waits for Rodion to crack and confess. Around him circle Sonya, Svidrigailov and his sister Dunya, each pulling at his conscience.

The cast includes Lyubov Aksyonova, Tikhon Zhiznevsky, Yulia Snigir and Vladimir Mishukov. Mirzoev doesn't dust the book off as a period piece — he reopens it as a story about guilt that refuses to stay silent.
