When the police bring him back the next morning, the bishop gifts him the candlesticks instead of pressing charges. Bernard Campan plays the bishop with such unforced warmth that the moment lands harder than expected.

Albert Dupontel, Dominique Pinon and Isabelle Carré fill out the cast. Besnard doesn't attempt the whole novel — he drills into the one scene that makes everything else in Valjean's story possible, and the result is a precise, chamber-sized moral drama that holds up without prior knowledge of Hugo.
