Synopsis
Jacquou the Rebel (Jacquou le Croquant, 2007) is a French historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. It opens in the Périgord countryside in 1815, where Napoleon has fallen but the land still answers to haughty counts.
A peasant boy named Jacquou grows up poor but happy until his father clashes with the arrogant Count de Nansac. The father is thrown in prison, and before long Jacquou loses both parents. A kind village priest, Bonal, takes the orphan in, and under his care the headstrong child becomes a steady, upright young man carrying one wound that never closes. Grown now, he holds to a single purpose: to make the Count pay for what was done to his family — and his private grievance slowly swells into a peasant uprising.
The story comes from Eugène Le Roy's 1899 novel, long a fixture of French school reading, here turned into a sweeping two-and-a-half-hour costume epic by director Laurent Boutonnat. Gaspard Ulliel plays Jacquou and Tchéky Karyo the Count, with Marie-Josée Croze, Albert Dupontel and Olivier Gourmet rounding out the cast. It's one for viewers who love broad period dramas about injustice and the long road to reckoning. Stream Jacquou the Rebel (2007) online on iFILM.
