Masyanya (Seasons 1–9)

Masyanya (2001) is a cult Russian animated series you can watch online on iFILM, created by Oleg Kuvaev and originally released as Flash episodes on the early Russian internet.

The main character is a young woman from St. Petersburg with no career ambitions and no particular gifts. She drinks beer, wanders the city with her friends Khryunya and Lokhmaty, argues over nothing, and squeezes as much out of ordinary days as she can. The animation is deliberately rough — Flash-drawn, choppy, unpolished — but the voice and attitude were immediately recognisable to anyone who was young in Russia in the early 2000s. No lessons, no arcs. Just life, rendered with disarming honesty.

Running continuously since 2001, Masyanya became one of the first and most enduring web animation projects in Russian internet history. What made it last is the same thing that made it land in the first place: it never tried to be anything more than exactly itself. Stream Masyanya online on iFILM.
