Synopsis
The Sect (2019) is a Russian psychological drama series to watch online on iFILM. Directed by Gela Babluani. A team of professional deprogrammers — specialists hired to pull people out of religious cults — takes on a commission: free Nika, a former model and advertising face, from an organisation called the Firstborn. She entered willingly. Getting her out is another matter entirely.
The team plants a mole named Lilya inside the cult. The Firstborn's leader responds by declaring open war on the deprogrammers — psychological pressure from both sides, sometimes crossing into physical violence. Svetlana Khodchenkova, Filip Yankovsky, Grigory Siyatvinda and Yevgeny Koryakovsky lead the cast. Babluani — the Georgian filmmaker behind the crime cult hit 13 Tzameti — brings an unsettling, tightly wound atmosphere to a subject Russian television rarely touches this directly.
