Synopsis

Season four finally gives Uhtred the opening he has been waiting for: Scottish raids have weakened Bebbanburg's defences, and he rides north to take back the castle stolen from him in childhood. The opening turns costly. He retreats south with captives and losses, and a war of a different kind is already under way — Edward and Aethelflaed pulling Mercia apart while Cnut assembles the largest Danish army the series has fielded. The alliance at Tettenhall answers that threat. Barely. Aethelred's dying throws Mercia into succession chaos, disease guts Uhtred's warband, and Brida leads the Danes into the heart of Wessex.
