Synopsis

For years England has been quiet. Uhtred, watching the northern border, does not trust the quiet. A betrayal at Eoferwic unsettles Sigtryggr; the death of Mercia's ruler sets off a succession scramble; and Aethelhelm, the most patient schemer in the series, manoeuvres Edward and Sigtryggr toward a war neither king wants — working quietly, through proxy attacks and sabotaged pilgrimages. Uhtred sees it coming and races to expose the truth, while recruiting a small band for one last attempt at Bebbanburg.
