Synopsis

It opens in 1950s Washington, at the peak of the Lavender Scare. Hawkins Fuller is a charming State Department climber who keeps his affairs with men cold and disposable — until he meets Tim Laughlin, a devout newcomer who refuses to stay disposable. Their romance ignites in an era when a whisper of homosexuality could end a career. The season doesn't sit still: it leaps from the McCarthy hearings to the anti-war 1960s, to the Fire Island of the 1970s, and on to 1986 San Francisco, where an older Hawk opens a mysterious package.
Each decade tests the two men — through Hawk's marriage to Lucy, through fear, through the damage they do to each other. A parallel thread following journalist Marcus and Frankie adds race and class to the picture. Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey play something thornier than romance: an intimacy that wounds as often as it heals. This is intimate, grown-up melodrama for viewers who can sit with difficult people.
