Synopsis
Halt and Catch Fire (2014), Season 1 is an AMC period drama you can watch online on iFILM — ten episodes set in 1983 Texas, where three outsiders pick a fight with IBM by building a personal computer of their own.
The spark is Joe MacMillan, an ex-IBM salesman who walks into a small firm called Cardiff Electronics carrying a hidden agenda. He pits family-man engineer Gordon Clark against Cameron Howe, a brilliant, prickly young coder, and forces them to reverse-engineer a rival machine while lawsuits circle. Money runs dry. Trust frays. Someone torches a colleague's work. The whole run builds toward the COMDEX trade show, where their machine, the Giant, has to either fly or sink everyone with it. The season is less about hardware than the people the work breaks down.
Lee Pace, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy and Kerry Bishé play ambition teetering on self-delusion. The Mad Men comparisons are earned — same period texture, same fascination with what success costs.
