Synopsis

Joaquin Phoenix plays Abe as a drinker who lectures on the meaning of life while seeing none in his own. Two women orbit him: Rita (Parker Posey), a colleague trapped in a dull marriage, and Jill, his sharpest student, played by Emma Stone. Then Abe overhears a stranger's conversation in a diner. Suddenly he has a purpose. He decides to do something cold, deliberate, and entirely insane.
