Synopsis

The Inspector travels to South Africa for a police conference in the opening episode. A Swedish woman goes missing. Wallander is also losing time: blackouts, dizziness, gaps where certainty used to be. The second case brings a knife-murder victim and her vanished daughter back in Sweden, and Wallander makes a mistake he cannot walk back. The third — the quietest, in its way the hardest to watch — sees him pursuing the disappearance of Linda's father-in-law, a retired naval officer whose past held one very old secret, even as Wallander's own memory keeps slipping.
The fourth season is about what happens to a detective when the instrument he relied on — his own mind — begins to fail. Kenneth Branagh plays the decline without sentiment, which is the right call. A woman’s knife-slashed corpse leads Wallander on a chase for the victim’s missing daughter, inciting him to a grievous oversight. In his private life, he bonds with Linda’s father-in-law, a retired naval officer, who gets a menacing birthday greeting. Convinced that something is not right with his brain, Wallander sees a doctor.
S4·E3The Troubled Man
His memory is going to pieces and he is no longer officially on duty, but Wallander draws on all his resources to find Linda’s missing father-in-law, a former top official in the Swedish navy, obsessed with a decades-old submarine mystery. Slowly losing his grip on reality, Wallander is desperate to solve this one last case.
