The family she escaped is still there in all its oddball, difficult, imperfect shape. So is the woman she's trying to care for, who is slowly becoming someone she doesn't recognise.

Nelson threads sharp comedy through genuinely painful material without softening either end. The ensemble cast keeps the film from tipping into grief-porn territory — there's too much life in the room for that. What lands is the specific cruelty of the disease: you lose someone while they're still physically present. Tangles handles that with more honesty than most live-action dramas manage.
