Synopsis
Away from Her (2007) is a Canadian drama you can watch online on iFILM, marking Sarah Polley's debut as a feature-film director. Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent star as Fiona and Grant, an Ontario couple more than four decades into a marriage that is quietly falling apart from the inside.
Fiona starts misplacing small things — then names, then roads, then her husband's face. After an Alzheimer's diagnosis, she moves into a nursing home that bars visitors for the first month, to help new residents settle. When Grant finally walks back through the door, Fiona doesn't recognize him. She has grown fond of another patient instead. Her capacity to love is intact; it has simply reattached elsewhere.
Polley adapted the screenplay from Alice Munro's short story "The Bear Came over the Mountain," and that quiet literary precision shows — the film refuses to say who suffers more, the one who forgets or the one left remembering. Christie picked up a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination for the performance. Stream Away from Her in full on iFILM.
