Bill Nighy plays the grandfather with the kind of economy he does better than almost anyone: a few words, a long silence, and you understand the whole history.

Matthews comes from documentary — his film about young boxers was remarkably unsentimental for the subject — and that instinct shows here. The boys feel uncoached.
