Synopsis
"The Prisoner of Second Avenue" (1975) is a Neil Simon comedy you can watch online on iFILM, starring Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft as a Manhattan couple whose comfortable middle-age suddenly stops being comfortable.
Mel Edison has just lost the job he held for years. The apartment gets robbed. A suffocating summer heatwave settles over the city. Edna picks up work — and gets cut almost immediately. Simon's original play walks a narrow line between farce and real dread; director Melvin Frank keeps both in the frame, with Lemmon going from sardonic to frantic within the same scene. Bancroft holds the whole thing together with the quiet determination of someone who refuses to let circumstances define her.
Two names in the supporting cast are worth the stop: a very young Sylvester Stallone and F. Murray Abraham, well before either became a household name. Stream "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" (1975) online on iFILM.
