Synopsis
The Broadway Melody (1929) is Harry Beaumont's musical melodrama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Two vaudeville singers, the Mahoney sisters, chase their big break on Broadway and walk straight into a love triangle nobody planned.
Harriet and Queenie arrive to rehearse a number in one of Francis Zanfield's new revues. Their old friend Eddie Kerns has set it up, and he's all but engaged to one of them. Then he meets Queenie, and the floor drops out: Eddie falls for her, while wealthy society man Jock Warriner is already circling. Queenie has to figure out who actually sees her and who just wants a pretty toy. Charles King, Anita Page and Bessie Love play it out among the greasepaint, the wings and the endless dance drills.
The historical weight here is hard to overstate. This was the first sound picture to take home the top Academy Award for Best Picture, and its pitch — "all talking, all singing, all dancing" — sold 1929 audiences a genuine novelty. Watch it now as a window into the rough, eager dawn of the talkies. Stream The Broadway Melody (1929) online on iFILM.
