About

Synopsis

A woman keeps meeting her own double, and it should not be there. Images (1972) is Robert Altman's psychological horror, available to watch online on iFILM. Children's author Cathryn retreats to the countryside with her husband to steady her nerves — instead her mind splinters further.

Susannah York plays a woman who loses the line between the living and the dead, between real lovers and imagined ones. Alone in a remote house by an Irish lake, she sees a drowned ex-lover, hears a stranger's voice on the phone, and watches her own twin pass the window. The camera stalks her through empty rooms while mirrors keep doubling the frame, leaving you as unmoored as she is. Hallucination or murder? The film is in no hurry to tell you.

York took the Best Actress prize at Cannes for this role; the score came from John Williams paired with Japanese percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta, and cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond turned the damp Irish landscape into a cold maze. A rare, half-forgotten Altman for anyone who likes a film that infects rather than explains. Stream Images (1972) online on iFILM.
