Synopsis
Summer 1993 (Estiu 1993, 2017) is a Spanish drama directed by Carla Simón — watch online on iFILM. Six-year-old Frida has just lost both her parents and is moved from Barcelona to the Catalan countryside, where her aunt and uncle take her in alongside their own four-year-old daughter Anna. Nobody explains anything properly. The adults are doing their best. The two girls work things out the way children do — with occasional cruelty and unexpected tenderness.
Simón drew the film directly from her own childhood, and that specificity shows in every scene. The camera stays at child height, following Frida through a summer that is both ordinary and irrevocably strange. Laia Artigas, who had no acting background at the time, gives a performance of absolute precision: watchful, stubborn, quietly grieving. The film picked up the Silver Bear for Best First Feature at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival.
It's not a weepy family drama. It's closer to a field recording of childhood — unhurried, honest, and precisely observed. Stream Summer 1993 (2017) online on iFILM.
