Synopsis
Toto the Hero (Toto le héros, 1991) is a Belgian tragicomedy by Jaco Van Dormael, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Now an old man, Thomas is certain of one thing: a fire in the maternity ward swapped him with the boy next door, and the life he was owed went to someone else.
Thomas narrates it himself, leaping between childhood, middle age and old age, between memory and the daydream where he stars as the secret agent Toto. The neighbor, Alfred, supposedly stole his place — and with it the money, the woman and the easy years. Decades of envy curdle into a plan to take it all back. How much of this really happened and how much is a wounded man's invention, the film lets you decide.
This was Van Dormael's feature debut, and it took the Caméra d'Or at Cannes in 1991 for best first film. The way it folds time and memory keeps the sad and the funny tangled together. One for viewers who like European auteur cinema with imagination and a bitter aftertaste. Stream Toto the Hero (1991) online on iFILM.
