Synopsis

Jim Lane tests prototype aircraft for a living. If the plane comes apart at altitude, that's still the job. His mechanic and closest friend Gunner keeps Jim functioning — in the air and on the ground, where Jim drinks steadily between flights. After an emergency landing in Kansas, Jim meets Ann and marries her fast, pulling her into a life calibrated around death odds.
The film is less about the flying than the cost of it. Gable and Tracy were the two biggest stars at MGM that year, and they earned it here: Tracy underplays everything Gable overplays, and every shared scene crackles.
