Synopsis
Joan of Arc (1948) is a Hollywood historical epic you can watch online on iFILM — directed by Victor Fleming as his final film before his death in 1949, and driven by Ingrid Bergman, who spent three years on Broadway in Maxwell Anderson's play before she got the picture made.
The story runs from France's darkest hour in the Hundred Years' War to the trial that ended Joan's life at nineteen. A teenage farm girl from Domrémy who followed heaven's orders, united a defeated army and placed the hesitant Dauphin Charles VII — a wry José Ferrer, nominated for an Oscar — on the throne at Reims. The English and the Church had other plans for her after that.
Seven Academy Award nominations, two wins: color cinematography and costume design. At 145 minutes, the film spends its most powerful stretch inside the courtroom, not on the battlefield — Bergman's Joan holds every frame of it. Watch Joan of Arc (1948) online on iFILM.
