Synopsis
Red Dust (1932) is a pre-Code drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Victor Fleming and pairing Clark Gable with Jean Harlow in the film that locked in their screen chemistry. Dennis Carson manages a rubber plantation deep in the Indochina jungle — and Vantine, a tough Saigon woman dodging the police, has turned up on his doorstep uninvited.
When a new surveyor arrives with his wife Barbara, played by Mary Astor, Dennis shifts his attention. The husband goes down with malaria. The plantation, already brutal in the rainy season, gets more complicated.
Fleming shot this before the Hays Code reshaped Hollywood, and the script doesn't soften anyone. Gable revisited the same role in Mogambo (1953), but this version is harder and stranger. Gable and Harlow made five films together in total — this is the one where the pairing first caught fire. Stream Red Dust online on iFILM.
