Synopsis
Maria (2024) is Pablo Larraín's biographical drama, available to watch online on iFILM, with Angelina Jolie as legendary soprano Maria Callas in the final week of her life.
Paris, September 1977. The voice that once silenced the halls of La Scala and the Met is nearly gone. Callas hides away in a grand apartment with two poodles, a steady supply of pills, and a staff that quietly counts her doses. Her butler Ferruccio (Pierfrancesco Favino) keeps moving the piano room to room; her cook Bruna (Alba Rohrwacher) keeps her fed and grounded. Between sedatives, the diva grants an interview to a journalist who may exist only in her head, replaying triumph, the Onassis affair, and the slow loss of her gift.
This completes Larraín's loose trilogy of women in crisis, after Jackie and Spencer. Cinematographer Edward Lachman frames the city like a stage where Callas rehearses her own ending. Jolie trained for months and sang parts of the arias herself, landing somewhere icy, regal and painfully fragile all at once. Stream Maria (2024) online on iFILM.
