Synopsis
The Trial of Joan of Arc (Procès de Jeanne d'Arc, 1963) is Robert Bresson's historical drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. Rouen, winter 1431: the captured Maid of Orléans faces a church court.
Bresson strips away the battles and the sainthood pageantry. Almost the whole hour is interrogation — robed judges press their questions, and a nineteen-year-old peasant (Florence Delay) answers plainly, without flinching. He lifted the dialogue almost verbatim from the surviving transcripts of the actual trial, so behind every theological trap you can feel a sharp, stubborn mind the inquisitors never quite break. The camera stays close on faces and hands while the English wait for a verdict settled long before it began.
This is austere work from a famed minimalist — no swelling music, no actorly fireworks, just the weight of words and looks. It runs barely over an hour and asks for your full attention, then pays back anyone willing to watch rather than wait for spectacle. Stream The Trial of Joan of Arc (1963) online on iFILM.
