Synopsis
Watch "The Quiet American" (2002) online on iFILM — director Phillip Noyce's adaptation of Graham Greene's novel, with Michael Caine as war-weary British correspondent Thomas Fowler stationed in Saigon in 1952. He has built a quiet life there, anchored by a young Vietnamese woman named Phuong.
Then Alden Pyle arrives. Brendan Fraser plays the earnest American with idealistic convictions and vague government ties who falls hard for Phuong and says so to Fowler's face. What starts as a rivalry over a woman slowly reveals something more dangerous underneath Pyle's calm surface. Fowler, who has spent years claiming neutrality, finds himself forced to choose a side.
Released just weeks before the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the film landed as something closer to prophecy than period piece. Caine's performance — detached, sardonic, quietly devastated — earned him a Golden Globe nomination and is the quiet engine that drives the whole thing. Stream The Quiet American in full on iFILM.
