Synopsis
The Lion in Winter (1968) is a British historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Anthony Harvey adapted James Goldman's stage play, casting Peter O'Toole as a weathered Henry II and Katharine Hepburn as his formidable queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine — released from a decade of imprisonment just in time for the Christmas court.
Henry wants to name an heir. His three sons — Richard, Geoffrey, and John — each want the crown, and none of them trust the others. Young King Philip II of France arrives with his own agenda, and Eleanor, sharper than anyone in the room, plays every angle simultaneously. Anthony Hopkins, still in the early stages of his career, plays Richard with a cold stillness that feels like a promise of things to come. Timothy Dalton is Philip.
Hepburn took home the Academy Award for Best Actress — a performance that makes Eleanor both ruthless and heartbroken within the same scene. What Harvey built here isn't really a history film; it's a chamber piece about power, inheritance, and what families do to each other when the stakes are everything.
