It opens at the 1880 Republican Convention, where an obscure Ohio congressman named James Garfield walks in to nominate someone else and walks out the nominee himself. Charles Guiteau watches it all and convinces himself he won the election. The season braids their paths together across a front-porch campaign, a brutal scramble to fill a Cabinet, and Garfield's collision with Roscoe Conkling's New York machine. Guiteau, meanwhile, keeps trying to force his way into a presidential audience that will never come.
