Synopsis

The Desperate Hours (1955) is one of the last films Humphrey Bogart made — a crime thriller directed by William Wyler that you can watch online on iFILM. Produced by Paramount in VistaVision and adapted by Joseph Hayes from his own novel and Broadway play, the film puts Bogart against type: not a worn-down good man this time, but a dangerous one with a grudge.

Three escaped convicts take over a quiet suburban family home. Glenn Griffin (Bogart) wants a specific score settled with the deputy sheriff who broke his jaw at the time of the original arrest; the Hilliard family — father, mother, teenage daughter, young son — becomes his leverage while he waits. Fredric March plays the father, Dan Hilliard, a man who starts the film as a victim and has to decide whether to stay one.

Wyler builds tension through confinement and silences rather than gunfire, and the violence stays mostly withheld for the first half. That patience is precisely what gives the picture its weight. Watch The Desperate Hours (1955) online on iFILM.
