The Quatermass Xperiment

The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) is a British sci-fi horror produced by Hammer Film Productions — watch it online on iFILM. Britain's first manned rocket returns from space and crashes in a quiet English field. Three men went up; only one comes back. He is alive, technically. But he cannot speak, cannot explain where the other two went, and something about him is visibly, horribly wrong.

Professor Bernard Quatermass, played by Brian Donlevy with the blunt authority of a man who built the rocket and refuses to pretend the wreck isn't his problem, pushes past the military cordon to find out what came back with his astronaut. Richard Wordsworth's performance as the surviving crew member is the film's real achievement — almost silent, almost sympathetic, deeply unsettling.

Director Val Guest shot it cheap and fast, closer to a documentary procedural than a monster film, and that restraint is exactly what makes it work. This was the first Quatermass adaptation — Nigel Kneale wrote the original BBC serial — and it set the tone for British science fiction horror across the following decade.
