Synopsis
Green Wing (2004) is a surreal British comedy from Channel 4 you can watch online on iFILM. It drops new surgical registrar Caroline Todd into a hospital staffed almost entirely by deranged adults, and lets the chaos run.
There's barely a plot to speak of. The show is built from sketches, awkward silences, sped-up and slowed-down gags, and long absurd corridor scenes. Caroline (Tamsin Greig) gets tangled between two charming, hopeless doctors, while the rest of the staff orbit their own madness: Julian Rhind-Tutt's smug anaesthetist, Stephen Mangan's twitchy Guy, and Michelle Gomez as Sue White, the most unhinged HR rep ever put on screen. A young Olivia Colman turns up in support.
Created by Victoria Pile, the series has a texture all its own — jump cuts that wreck the rhythm, heavy improvisation, humour that sits right on the edge of unbearable embarrassment. It took home a BAFTA in 2005. If you like British comedy at its strangest and don't need a tidy story arc, this one rewards you. Stream Green Wing online on iFILM.
