Synopsis
Owning Mahowny (2003), a crime drama led by Philip Seymour Hoffman, is yours to watch online on iFILM. Dan Mahowny is young, soft-spoken, and forever in a rumpled coat. To his colleagues at a Toronto bank he's a spotless workaholic. Not one of them suspects he keeps a second life going.
After hours, the quiet clerk bleeds money at the casino. The bets climb, the debts climb faster, and Mahowny figures out how to pull cash from the one place he can reach: his own clients' accounts. Hoffman plays the addiction with zero glamour or thrill — his man barely enjoys a minute of it, he simply can't stop, which lands harder than any high-stakes rush on screen. Minnie Driver is the girlfriend who senses something is off but can't gauge the scale. John Hurt is the casino manager all too happy to keep a profitable customer coming back.
The plot grows out of a real case: the man it's based on pulled off the biggest one-man bank fraud in Canada's history, running into the millions. Richard Kwietniowski directs it cold and exact, sparing you any tidy moral. It's one of Hoffman's finest, most overlooked turns — for anyone who loves quiet, needling dramas about self-destruction.
