Synopsis
In America (2003) is Jim Sheridan's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. An Irish family slips into New York without papers and rents a room in a run-down building on the edge of Hell's Kitchen, sharing the halls with addicts and a fearsome painter named Mateo.
Johnny wants to make it as an actor; his wife Sarah takes whatever work she can find. Both are carrying a grief they won't name out loud — their young son died not long before they left home. The city hits them with heat, empty pockets and noise. Their two daughters, ten-year-old Christy and tiny Ariel, see none of the hardship and all of the wonder, and it's their stubborn faith that slowly mends what nearly broke. Christy films everything on an old camcorder, and her lens becomes the eye of the movie.
Sheridan wrote the script with his own daughters, drawing on his memories of emigrating, and that closeness shows in every scene. The film was up for three Oscars — Samantha Morton, Djimon Hounsou and the original screenplay all made the ballot. It handles a child's death without milking it and poverty without despair.
