Synopsis
The Princess and the Warrior (Der Krieger und die Kaiserin, 2000) is Tom Tykwer's German romance, ready to watch online. After Run Lola Run, the director reunited with Franka Potente — but this time the story drifts slowly, like a waking dream.
Sissi is a nurse at a psychiatric hospital and rarely steps beyond its walls. Out on the street one day a truck knocks her down; she lies pinned beneath it, unable to breathe. A stranger surfaces from the crowd, cuts a tiny opening with a tube and quite literally breathes her back to life — then vanishes. He's Bodo, an ex-soldier scraping by on odd jobs and petty crime, a man carrying a wound nobody can see. Sissi decides this was no accident. She tracks him down, and he turns her away.
Benno Fürmann plays Bodo like a spring wound tight with grief, while Potente gives us a quiet woman swimming against the current for the first time. Tykwer films their slow collision as a minor miracle, with his signature score and careful framing. It's for anyone who loves European romance with a strange streak, where fate outranks logic.
