About

Synopsis

The Man Who Cried (2000) is a drama by Sally Potter that you can watch online on iFILM. The story begins in 1927 with a young Jewish girl torn from her Russian village when her father emigrates to America. Renamed Suzie, raised in an English orphanage, she eventually lands in Paris as a singer with a voice that gets her hired at the opera — but nothing that feels like home.

Christina Ricci plays Suzie as a woman adrift in someone else's world, her original language long gone. Cate Blanchett is her impulsive, show-girl companion. Johnny Depp plays a Roma horseman who offers Suzie her first real connection in years. John Turturro rounds out the cast as a famous tenor whose ambition outlasts his courage once the German occupation reaches Paris.

What Potter built here is less a conventional romance and more a portrait of how war and displacement shape identity across two continents and three languages. Suzie spends the whole film searching for her father — and the film takes that search seriously rather than using it as backdrop. Stream The Man Who Cried (2000) online on iFILM.
