Synopsis
Poetic Justice (1993) is John Singleton's quiet, sun-soaked road drama — watch it online on iFILM. Janet Jackson plays Justice, a South Central hairdresser who shut herself off from the world after watching her boyfriend get shot at a drive-in. She writes poetry to survive the grief. The poems in the film were written by Maya Angelou.
A trip to Oakland throws Justice into a car with her friend, the friend's boyfriend, and his co-worker Lucky — a postal worker played by Tupac Shakur who gets under her skin from the first minute. Across two days and the length of California, between county fairs and family stops, the friction between them turns into something neither expected.
Singleton made this right after Boyz n the Hood and deliberately slowed everything down — less plot, more people. It's one of the few romances from that era that shows a Black working-class neighborhood as simply a place people live, without violence as a frame. Stream Poetic Justice online on iFILM.
