Synopsis
Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993) is Mamoru Oshii's anime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Three years on from the first film, the giant police mechs called Labors mostly sit idle in their hangar.
A bridge over Tokyo is bombed, the blame lands on a Self-Defense Force jet, and the government declares martial law. Who actually pulled it off stays murky — agencies turn on each other, the army and the police jockey for control, and the real architect works the strings from the shadows. Stripped of their machines, the old Section 2 pilots run their own investigation to head off a coup.
Oshii, who would later make Ghost in the Shell, has no interest in robot fights here. This is a cold war-room drama about how a handful of people can tip a whole nation into chaos with almost no force at all. It rewards patience — long silences, a low anxious hum, ideas over action.
