Synopsis
Madadayo (1993) is the final film of Akira Kurosawa, a gentle comic drama you can watch online on iFILM. The setting is Tokyo just after the war, where elderly professor Hyakken Uchida steps away from teaching to live quietly — writing, reading, growing old in a small house.
His former students refuse to let him fade. Every year they gather for a loud birthday toast, shouting the childhood hiding game: "Mada-kai?" — "Are you ready?" — and he answers "Madadayo!", "Not yet!" The reply slowly becomes a quiet stand against death itself. A bombing destroys his home, then his beloved cat Nora vanishes, and the search for one missing animal turns into the most dramatic event of fifteen unhurried years. Tatsuo Matsumura plays the old man without sugar — stubborn, grumbling, and deeply loved.
Kurosawa made this at 83, and it plays like his own farewell: not about glory but about gratitude, friendship, and the dignity of aging. No samurai, no battles for fans of Seven Samurai — only warm vignettes and a closing dream of golden fields. Best suited to viewers ready for slow, intensely personal cinema, and curious how a master chose to sign off. Stream Madadayo (1993) online on iFILM.
