Synopsis
The Reckoning (2004) is a dark medieval mystery by Paul McGuigan, ready to watch online on iFILM. In 14th-century England, a disgraced priest named Nicholas flees punishment by joining a troupe of traveling players.
The next village greets them with a gallows. A deaf-mute woman has been condemned for murdering a boy she never touched. Instead of the usual saints' stories, the troupe's leader Martin stages the crime itself in the town square, scene by scene — and the deeper the play goes, the clearer it becomes that the real killer is watching from the crowd, and he has power. Paul Bettany and Willem Dafoe anchor it; a young Tom Hardy and Vincent Cassel turn up in support.
The script comes from Barry Unsworth's novel Morality Play, about the moment theatre stops retelling the Bible and starts speaking about living people. Mud, torchlight, plague at the edge of town — there is no romance to this Middle Ages. A solid whodunit for anyone who likes the investigating done by actors instead of detectives.
