Synopsis
Gangster No. 1 (2000) — watch online on iFILM. Directed by Paul McGuigan, the film splits a single criminal life across two time frames: Paul Bettany as the young man clawing his way to the top of London's underworld in the late 1960s, and Malcolm McDowell as the older version of him looking back thirty years later with something between pride and fury.
The unnamed gangster joins Freddie Mays' crew — played by David Thewlis with a kind of dangerous warmth — and rises through trust rather than force. When a rival threat gives him an opening to destroy Freddie instead of defending him, he takes it without a second thought. No guilt. No hesitation. Freddie goes to prison for three decades; his protégé steps into the gap.
Bettany makes the younger version genuinely unsettling — a man who reads envy as appetite and acts on it with total conviction. This is a British crime film less concerned with heist mechanics than with what drives someone to dismantle the one person who believed in them. Stream Gangster No. 1 online on iFILM.
